For one hundred and seven years Kunsthalle Bern has stood in the center of Bern, visible to all. Like a treasure chest, it has been opened, closed, cared for, and maintained countless times. Today, we would like to take a closer look at the building of Kunsthalle Bern as a container for art. What stories does the building reveal to us? What traces have history and artists left behind?
In 2025, during construction work due to impending fire safety regulations, students from the Conservation and Restoration Department at Bern University of the Arts immersed themselves in the multi-layered history of Kunsthalle Bern.
We want to take you on a journey through time and space: Learn how the students researched and documented the extensive collection of repeatedly painted-over murals by famous artists inside the building. Layers will be uncovered, turning the treasure chest into a treasure.
This event is part of the European Heritage Days. In German.
Organized by the Bern University of the Arts (HKB), Department of Conservation and Restoration (KuR) in collaboration with Kunsthalle Bern.
